From Scholarship to Impact: Tekle Tafere Kidane Joins Eritrea’s Crop Breeding Efforts

Tekle Tafere Kidane, one of the ten MSc scholars sponsored by Seed Systems Group (SSG) under our capacity-building initiative for sustainable seed systems, has graduated with a Master’s degree in Plant Breeding and Seed Systems from Makerere University.

Congratulations, Tekle! We are incredibly proud to have supported you throughout this journey.
This achievement was made possible through the generous financial support of IFAD under the ongoing seed systems development initiative in the Greater Horn of Africa. Partnerships like this demonstrate how strategic investment in human capital strengthens national agricultural research systems and builds long-term resilience.

This milestone is also significant for Eritrea. Tekle will now contribute to strengthening national crop breeding programs and advancing the development and delivery of improved, climate-resilient varieties to farmers more effectively and efficiently.

The remaining nine scholars, five from Somalia and four from Eritrea, are currently in their final year of study at Makerere University and the University of Zimbabwe.
At SSG, we believe sustainable seed systems require sustainable expertise. Investing in local plant breeders is an investment in long-term food security, resilience, and agricultural transformation across underserved African countries.
